A Note on Opossum StyleThe Virginia Opossum in its manner of politics and in its daily life is not prone to fighting and bickering. When confronted with a dangerous situation, the opossum will often turn over on its back, acting as if it were dead. When the potential attacker looses interest in the opossum, or simply forgets why it bothered to bother in the first place, the opossum resumes its daily routine. This effective political method of coming to terms with the world and its more belligerent folks has come to be known as Playing Possum.
